Automatic intonation modeling with INTSINT

چکیده

Accurate intonation modeling has become a vital part of modern day speech synthesis systems. This is especially true for tonal languages such as isiZulu, where the intonation of an utterance not only influences the perceived naturalness of the synthetic voice, but may also influence its semantics. In this work we explore the INTSINT intonation modeling algorithm and its application to an isiZulu speech synthesiser. For fundamental frequency an algorithm, MOMEL, for the automatic derivation of a representation as a sequence of target points is applied. A symbolic coding system for fundamental frequency patterns is implemented. We show that the model’s level of phonetic representation has the potential to provide an interface between abstract cognitive representations and their physical manifestations, but requires more in-depth phonological information.

Integrating Changes of Register into Automatic Intonation Analysis

While current tools for the automatic analysis and modeling of intonation are satisfactory for laboratory or isolated sentences, they appear insufficient for the study of longer stretches of authentic speech, which are in general marked by systematic changes of register. This study shows that implementing automatically detected register changes significantly improves the accuracy of the automat...

The Phonology of Melodic Prominence: the Structure of Melisms

This paper aims at proposing a surface phonological tonal annotation and stylization fitted to the lexical space. More precisely it makes it possible to phonologically structure the F0 variations in prominent words. In previous studies, this specific F0 configuration in such words has been called melism. These principles are integrated in an automatic procedure (INTSMEL) which supplies an autom...

Levels of representation and levels of analysis for the description of intonation systems

It is argued that a satisfactory global theory of intonation will require four levels of analysis : (i) physical (acoustic, physiological) (ii) phonetic (iii) surface phonological and (iv) deep phonological. The theoretical and cognitive status of each level is discussed and specific proposals are made for a model respecting such an overall architecture as well as a condition of interpretabilit...

An Analysis-by-Synthesis Study of Mandarin Speech Prosody

In the present paper an analysis by synthesis study of mandarin speech prosody is carried out. The mandarin prosodic features are discussed from two salient perspectives, specifically: the function of prosody and the form of prosody. The symbolic representation of prosodic form with the INTSINT (INternational Transcription System for INTonation) system [1] reduces the surface complexity of a pr...

Symbolic coding of higher-level characteristics of fundamental frequency curves

In this paper we present the results of a study of higher-level effects on fundamental frequency curves in French. To observe these, we analysed four readings lasting approximately one minute of a text composed of three paragraphs. We used a modelling technique which allowed us to capture a number of features of individual Intonation Units embedded in a sentence, in a paragraph and finally in a...
